Selfish Desires

I find it curious how traditional religions proclaim that we should have no desires, that selfish desires are "bad". The truth is, if there was no selfish desire, we would not move even a single finger.

Desire is the driving force behind humanity and all of our history.

Now, there is such a thing as altruistic desire, but within every altruistic desire, is a kernel of selfish desire. If I want the world to be at peace, and for universal abundance, it is because I want peace and abundance for myself.

So perhaps it is not that desire is bad, but rather that the quality of the desire matters.

If I can get what I want, by everyone else also getting what they want, then the quality of the desire is good.

But if my vision is so limited that I imagine I can only get what I want by taking from others what I want leaving them impoverished, then the quality of the desire is bad.

Seen in this way "bad desire" is the driving force behind capitalism. "Good desire" is the driving force behind socialism. In both cases, desire drives history forward. But the result of each, is the difference between heaven and hell.
