Non attachment

What is non attachment all about? It's very simple. It's the difference between saying "I need this, I want this" and saying "I can abstain from this and be none the sadder for it".

It's not depravation of experience, but rather a distance and non commitment to the experience. If the experience never was to come again, you would not be upset about it. So, it can be observed that attachment is everywhere. In our lives, in our societies, in our cultural values. Attachment to wealth, to vacations, to luxury, to a fit body, to beauty, to status, to power, to sex, to drugs. Just to name a few.

Such attachments compels us to exert our will upon the world. Upon others. Upon ourselves. In my opinion, this is rather problematic as we quite often inadvertently cause damage when we exert our will upon the world. Such exertion of will is, in a word, violence. We simply do not see the consequences clearly. Nor are we wise enough. As the Buddha said.. the root of suffering is attachment.

There is however, I believe, one attachment which is worthy of keeping and it is the attachment to God.

Through Him, every experience comes. If first we love Him, we will lack nothing. Instead our lives will be full of gratitude for the experiences which He provides, while demanding nothing.

Only this attachment allows you to move through life, unburdened.

Any other attachment is putting the cart before the horse, figuratively speaking.
