Control and Freedom
I think evil wants to control others, and use others, because it believes others truly exist, apart from itself. It does not know that it is itself it consumes, uses and destroys. If it knew, it would awaken and be changed. I suppose that is the alchemy of transmutation, turning darkness into light.
In economics, in ecology and in all the areas of life where human beings exist, there is a tendency to destroy, control and consume. All that comes from ignorance of who we are. If we knew that "I am my neighbor, and my neighbor is me", then who could I hurt except myself? If we knew that we are the forests we cut down, the air we breathe, the planet we destroy, would we continue doing so?
The simple truth is that if someone who abuses others, knew that they themselves would have to endure the abuse from both sides, they would stop because they have a sense of self-preservation. Extending that self-preservation to others, is what makes someone "good". If I was violent towards my partner, and knew that in my next life I would be my partner, I would end the abuse not tomorrow but yesterday. And that is true for all things. The animals we treat cruelly, the ecology we abuse, the climate we destroy. We are ALL of it and we have to endure ALL of it. That is the insight which the concept of karma is based on.
We love God by loving each other. By respecting each other. By caring for and supporting each other. This is true ethics, born not from it being imposed upon us, but from understanding. This understanding removes confusion, and the removal of confusion allows for a "Heaven on Earth".
So how does one come to this understanding? I think, a good place to begin is in the breath. Traditionally we think our lungs are "me", and that the air is "not me", and we fail to notice that they go together. My lungs would be quite useless, without the rest of me.
Once that connection is made, it can be extended outwards until it encompasses the all.
